As a professional photographer, I get asked this question almost daily.
“What is the best camera out there? ”
It makes sense to ask for advice on this topic. There’s not a simple answer because there are too many options, and all cameras out there today are made for different scenarios. No matter what your budget is, it can be very difficult to decide what camera is right for you. So why not ask a pro?
I think many expect me to just tell them the camera I shoot with and why it’s my favorite so you should get it too. Many think, “If I have what that photographer has, I can get the best shots too.” But I can guarantee that you would never want to lug around my hefty Nikon d850 with a 24-70mm lens regularly.
The truth is, any (newer) digital camera can take great photos. Why? Because it’s your job as the photographer storyteller to create a visual story that is unique to you. It’s never just about the camera. Although, it is important to some degree and that’s why I am writing this guide. Because there are so many choices, you deserve to know why they are different. You should feel confident knowing which ones are right for you.
However, I have a secret to share with you… It doesn’t matter which camera you buy!
Any camera on the market today from budget-friendly beginner DSLR cameras to higher-range DSLRs and Mirrorless cameras, can create incredible images. But even with all the bells and whistles of high-tech gear, it still requires YOUR CREATIVE GENIUS to bring a great story to life. Any photographer who captures life because they love the creative process will agree with me on this.
Chase Jarvis said, “The best camera is the one you have with you.”
I’m saying, “The best camera is the want you WANT to have with you always.”
Now more than ever before, we have access to amazing technology. Technology that allows us to dive into our creativity. I hope this gives you peace of mind when deciding. No matter what camera you buy, what matters most is that you know why. Instead of choosing a DSLR or Mirrorless camera because solely of reviews, price, or which one comes with more features, I want you to think about the purpose behind your purchase. Ask yourself why you want to purchase a new camera in the first place.
No matter what your motivation is, you know something has inspired you to take that leap and invest in a better camera. Keep that purpose, your inspiration, at the forefront of all your photography buying decisions. Don’t buy something just because someone told you it’s the “best”. Buy something because you feel you’ve mastered the gear you already have. Then, based on your purpose, you can upgrade to create images that help you in the direction you want to grow as a photographer.
