Here at Live Wonderful, we feel that photography is not only about capturing beautiful photos, it’s about enjoying the experience of the present moment and all that comes with bringing a visual story to life. We don’t believe you need tons of gear to get great shots. In fact, we always recommend starting out with used gear because even older digital cameras are still amazing and the technology will continue to change rapidly. Remember, what matters most is you. You’re the storyteller, the camera is just your tool. Some of the most celebrated images were taken with much older cameras.

When deciding what camera is best for you, first you have to know the different kinds of cameras that are available today. As our fast-paced modern world continues to develop, the world of digital photography is also in a constant state of rapid growth.

Looking back on the evolution of digital cameras we can see that new technology is created to give us more possibilities to capture more detail with less difficulty in less light.  Now, in the last 15 years or so, the average price of these digital cameras has come down and the average consumer has the budget to purchase this incredible piece of technology called the digital single reflex lens camera. The newest form of digital photography is called a mirrorless camera. Let’s talk about both of these cameras and what makes them so great.

Difference between Mirrorless and DSLR

The main difference between Mirrorless and DSLR: The DSLR cameras have a series of mirrors that reflect the light from the lens into the viewfinder for you to see. When we look through the viewfinder, we see exactly what it looks like in real life. The reflected light hitting the mirrors is measured by the camera’s internal light meter. The meter helps us determine how much or how little light is coming through. Read more in detail about DSLR.

With the newer technology of mirrorless cameras, there are no mirrors blocking the sensor. The lens sits much closer to the image sensor. This allows the sensor to constantly be exposed to the light coming through the lens. Using an Electronic ViewFinder (EVF), mirrorless cameras duplicate what the image sensor is “seeing” before you take the shot. Essentially you can see what your photo will look like before you take the shot. Read more in detail about the mirrorless cameras.

Why are DSLR and mirrorless cameras the best cameras you can buy today?

Simply put, these cameras give you the most creative control of capturing the stories you want to bring to life. Any other type of camera including your mobile phone is never going to give you the control you want over the light motion, focus, and framing of your shot as well as a DSLR or mirrorless camera will.

Many people swear by their smartphones for taking great shots. They’re happy with quickly tapping the screen using the auto mode to snap a shot. And that’s okay! But if you are looking to enjoy creating great images, you know you don’t want to miss out on the most important aspect of capturing life’s best moments.

When you use a phone or point-and-shoot camera, you have very little creative control of how your images will look because these cameras are always in “auto mode”. If you want to be able to create those beautiful blurry background portraits or stop a fast-action sports shot, you will want to invest in a DSLR or mirrorless camera. These incredible pieces of technology have only been available to the average consumer for a few decades, but they have changed the way we visualize everything in our lives simply because these cameras have the ability to let anyone control the exposure of the light as well as the movement and focus of their subjects within the scene.

This is what all professional photographers want and need. This is why we all use DSLR cameras and some of us are even starting to make that switch to mirrorless camera technology. Now, there is finally a lineup of incredible DSLR and mirrorless cameras available at price points that most consumers can afford. That is why now more than ever, taking photos with a DSLR camera has the potential to literally bring your best stories to life and show you a brand new creative perspective of how you can #livewonderful.
